Meghalaya is unusual in terms of demographic composition, having a population of 29,66,889 people spread over seven districts (as of Census 2011 and the National Family and Health Survey-4). Meghalaya is a tribal state with more than twice the population of Bahrain, dominated by three tribes: Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia, all of which are matrilineal and hence likely matriarchal.
